What are refurbished servers?

These are corporate-class rack machines imported from Europe, where they ran in the data centres of large companies. They were replaced on a hardware-refresh schedule rather than because they failed — which is why they reach the market fully working, at a fraction of the price of a new server.

A used server is how you afford hardware that costs several times more when new: two processors, hundreds of gigabytes of memory, and a disk array with redundant power.

Advantages and drawbacks

Advantages:

• Price: with servers, the gap against a comparable new machine is the widest in our whole range.
• Hardware class: these are lines built for 24/7 duty — HPE ProLiant, Dell PowerEdge, Fujitsu PRIMERGY — with spare parts available years after the model is discontinued.
• Warranty: every server carries a one-year warranty, and its condition is stated before you order.

Drawbacks: rack servers are loud and not meant for a living room — 1U models especially. They are also past the manufacturer's warranty. Where there is wear or a missing component, it is stated in the product's specifications.

How to choose a refurbished server

Which configuration?

Start from the job. A file server, domain controller or surveillance recorder is fine with one processor and 32–64 GB of memory. For virtualisation — several guests on one host — look for a dual-socket model with 128 GB or more, which is what most machines in this section are.

Drives are the other decision: SAS is the server standard because it withstands constant load, and a hardware RAID controller protects your data when a drive fails. Check the number of bays in the chassis too — that is how far you can grow without replacing the machine.

1U or 2U?

1U takes half the rack space, but cooling relies on small, fast fans — hence the noise. 2U is quieter, holds more drives and cards, and leaves room to upgrade. If the server will sit in an office rather than a separate room, 2U is the wiser choice.

What to check before ordering

Look at the processor and core counts, the memory size and the drive type — all listed on each product. If you are unsure which configuration fits your workload, call us and we will pick it together.
